Akaka Bill to Promote Legal Status For Native Hawaiians
A 5-paragraph summary of what's wrong
with the bill, followed by extensive "footnotes" documenting the main
points: http://www.angelfire.com/hi2/hawaiiansovereignty/AkakaNationalSummary2004.ht
The recently passed omnibus appropriations bill included a 4-paragraph section
establishing a U.S. Office for Native Hawaiian Relations inside the Department
of Interior (this is a small but significant piece of the Akaka bill and
indicates a
new strategy of trying to pass the Akaka bill piecemeal). Article includes
the exact language, and also a short primer on how to use the Library of
Congress website to read and track bills in Congress

A description of the influence of Alaska oil money in supporting the Hawaiian
Recognition bill. Alaska politicians, especially Senator Ted Stevens,
support the Hawaiian bill in return for Akaka and Inouye supporting opening the
Alaska National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling. The Arctic North Slope
Corporation (Inupiat tribe) sends large contributions to lobbying groups
supporting the Hawaiian bill. Senators opposing ANWR drilling, and
political groups opposing "big oil," might decide to oppose the
Hawaiian bill if made aware of the role of Alaska oil money in pushing the bill.

Here's an article from the Denver Post
saying that Alaska Senator Stevens has been trying to pass legislation to allow
the Arctic Slope Regional Corporation (Alaska's Inupiat tribe's Billion dollar
corporation) to establish casinos anywhere they wish
throughout the U.S. This is the same Stevens who is cosponsor of the Akaka
bill, and the same Arctic Slope Corporation that has donated big bucks to a
powerful Hawaiian political group whose main purpose is to lobby in favor of the
Akaka bill. The Denver Post article is: http://www.denverpost.com/Stories/0,1413,36%257E11676%257E1889404,00.html
